Digging My Way To China

When I was a young boy I was convinced that I could dig a whole all the way to China. I’m not sure who put the idea in my head, but I’ve learned that I’m not the only one who thought they could do that. I’m sure many of you did the same as a kid.

There was this one day , when I was about 7 that me and my friends got the shovel out to begin our quest. We picked a spot in my back yard and started the dig. 1ft…2ft… 4ft deep, we were on our way. We just wanted to keep digging deeper. We wondered how long it would take us to get to China. As we burrowed past different layers of  soil our excitement grew.  When we reached the 6ft mark their was no turning back. We had to put a ladder in the hole because it was deeper that we were tall. Because we were in a hole over our heads I didn’t hear my Mom until she yelled my name and I knew we were in trouble. You see, we were totally unaware of what was happening in the world around us, because we were focused on digging our hole deeper.

As I think back on that day I wonder what it is in us that drives us to want to “GO DEEPER”? I hear that all the time in Christian circles. People leave Churches because they want to go deeper yet years later they still have they same ole lack of impact in their community.  I would ask who are you going deep for? Yourself? Because what happens more times than not when we go deep is that we let our knowledge puff us up as we sit in our hole that we have dug while we let the whole world go to hell. If in your quest to go deep you can no longer see the needs of the world around, you have missed the point. I say, Go Deep, but not so you can glory in your hole. Go Deep so you can have a WIDE impact on the world around you. Deep and Wide, Deep and Wide, there’s a Christian growing Deep and Wide. God’s love is deep, but it is also wide. And because of that he calls us to extend our reach for Him way outside the boundries of our little “HOLE”.
